Adult ADHD: Why Sensory Stimulation is the Secret

In my last article I told about a kid with ADHD symptoms who I was working with in my practice. I taught him to connect his love of hockey with doing science homework, which he was currently getting F's in because he was bored. He used hockey cards and posters and music to do this and he ended up getting A's in Science as a result.

That's an example of someone with ADHD symptoms connecting something they love and something they're not that excited about together to make it at least a semi-exciting experience.

Today, Stephanie Frank and I are going to going to talk about how to use sensory stimulation with Adult ADHD symptoms--using all five senses--to help focus the brain with Adult ADHD.

An example of this is when I have to do the dishes--something I find extremely boring. It's hard for me to stand there for more than two minutes. My ADHD symptoms kick in and I wander off. So here's what I do to stay focused when I do the dishes.

First I make myself a nice pot of coffee (ever noticed how people with Adult ADHD love coffee?). The second thing I do when I want to get a household chore done at high speed is, a technique I started using after we came up with this hockey idea for the kid with ADHD symptoms I was working with: except I use a different interest.

I'm a distance runner. I love running. So, I actually will get in my running clothes, shoes, shorts, and shirt, and do the dishes at high speed while dressed up like a runner. It's kind of a funny sight, but it works. It works really well--and can work great for anyone Adult ADHD symptoms.

Stephanie Frank explains why this really works with Adult ADHD symptoms:

Stephanie: Let's talk about why that works with Adult ADHD, Tellman. If you're focusing on something, you're probably doing it unconsciously. You're not even aware of all the things that are happening. Let's bring that up to the awareness level that people with Adult ADHD symptoms operate at.

The point is that when you want to focus, people with Adult ADHD symptoms have a brain, a body, a mind that works automatically in kind of a multi-tasking sort of a mode. People with Adult ADHD can accomplish many, many things at once, whereas most people without ADHD symptoms have to go from one thing to the next thing to the next thing.

Because you have Adult ADHD symptoms, you like to do lots of things at once. This is because when you sit down and you try to just focus on this one thing, what happens is your brain almost rebels. It shuts down. It gets to that point where it says, "Ugh. I'm so bored. There's not enough stimulus. There's nothing going on. I can't just focus on this one thing because I have such a capacity to do more things."

The basic premise for getting something done with Adult ADHD symptoms, especially when it's something you don't like to do, is very simple, and it's this: you have to involve multiple senses. You have to involve all your senses.

Tellman said that he puts on a pot of coffee for the sense of smell. Of course, caffeine doesn't hurt, right? So right there, you can smell the coffee. Then he puts on his running clothes. That's kinesthetic. That's feeling in your body. You could also light a candle. That could be a visual sense that doesn't distract, or it could be a smell too.

You can play music. That is auditory. So, you've got your entire body, all your senses involved and being stimulated...and your ADHD symptoms are just soaking it up, actually helping you to focus more...did I get all the senses?

Tellman: Well, you're talking about visual, kinesthetic, auditory or hearing, olfactory, and gustatory which is smell and taste. Then, some people would say, "What about your connection with your spiritual life?" Some people would even refer to that as a sixth sense.

You can integrate that too, if that's your style, and that makes sense to you. Whatever religion you practice, see if you can somehow incorporate that into what you're doing.

There are lots of very powerful ways to simply connect up things that interest you with what you're doing, to really make them work for you. Be creative. Use your ADHD symptoms of hyper-creativity and innovation to your advantage on this.

While we're on the subject, there is another solution people with Adult ADHD symptoms can use for getting those things done that you don't like to do, and it's called "outsourcing."

There are very specific ways people with Adult ADHD can outsource things at home, and things at work, that are taking your time and energy that shouldn't be. To find out more about outsourcing and other great techniques for Adult ADHD, see below.

How to Give the Best Fellatio - Oral Stimulation of the Penis From a Neuro-Sensory Perspective

There are many factors which can stimulate a man's penis from the oral perspective. I will try to approach this from a neurological aspect and define what sensory receptors need to be stimulated (and how) to introduce maximum pleasure in a man.

With this article I will address only the penis, itself. There are other modes of stimulation that can enhance the oral-sex experience; such as stimulation to the testicles, perineum, and rectum. Again, this will only address the penis.

An important concept to understand is that the shaft of the penis is primarily innervated by free nerve endings that stimulate Protopathic (generalized) Sensitivity. These provide crude and basic sensory responses to temperature, vibration, compression, and pain. The glans (head) is, too, but has a higher sensitivity and other sensory receptors.

Like the rest of the body, the male penis (and female clitoris) have many methods of stimulation. To get the most intense experience (for the male) out of oral stimulation it is best if all forms of stimulation can be applied at one time. With the penis we are concerned with the following four additional sensations (there are more sensations in the body than the six main senses of taste, hearing, touch, smell, balance, and vision) for enhanced stimulation:

Vibration
Compression/Distortion
Light Touch
Temperature

Vibration - Vibration is an integral method of sensory stimulation in most of the body, especially the skin. There are vibration receptors in the superficial and deep portions of the penile skin that respond to vibration. In the penis this added inclusion of vibration is another element to bring a man to orgasm upon oral stimulation. There are generalized areas throughout the penis that respond to vibration, but the greatest number of vibration receptors (especially deep receptors) lies in the head of the penis. Have you ever heard the joke about humming 'The National Anthem" while performing fellatio? Now you know why. By humming while performing this act, you vibrate the penis and stimulate these receptors. Focusing special attention on the head of the penis while humming will add a new dimension to the sensory input your partner feels. It is also applicable to the rest of the penis but the main focus should be on the glans.

Compression/Distortion - There are special receptors that respond to compression and distortion. This is what a man feels when his penis enters the vagina. The distortion (or compression) of these receptors send sensory signals to the brain which result in pleasure being produced. Again, they are most numerous in the glans of the penis but extend all along the shaft, too. By applying compression through vacuum (sucking) or by pressure of the lips, this will help stimulate these sensors and create more pleasure.

Light Touch - This is more for men who are uncircumcised, as the foreskin is the main sensory area that responds to very light touch. Imagine gently stroking your fingers across your forearm, just barely touching the skin. It creates a very delicate, yet stimulating, response. The foreskin is especially susceptible to this type of light stimulation by the tongue or lips. The glans and shaft are also responsive to this form of stimuli, but if a man is uncircumcised, this will typically make the hair on the back of his neck stand up.

Temperature - This is a no-brainer really, but it's important to realize its importance. The penis has receptors that respond to heat and cold which reflect feelings of pleasure in the male (and in the female with the clitoris). Just by introducing the penis into the mouth will stimulate the temperature receptors in the penis. Holding the penis for a moment or two without any other form of stimulation from the tongue or lips will, just by itself, create a feeling of pleasure. This is not unlike the penis entering the heat of the vagina.

One other factor that is extremely important is the frenulum. This is considered the Orgasmic Trigger in the male and stimulation and light pressure on this area will typically drive a man to the edge. This is located behind the bottom of the glans of the penis. In a circumcised man you will see it as a tear-drop shaped or "Y" structure. It is rich in nerve endings and is considered to be one of the most sensitive areas of the penis. Unfortunately for circumcised men it may have been damaged during the surgical operation. By applying light touch and pressure with the tongue to this area will have great stimulatory effects.

The key is to coordinate all of these stimuli into one package for maximum stimulation in the male:

The movement of the penis in and out of the mouth will trigger stretch and compression sensors (with the lips), as well as friction on the glans and shaft that reproduce vaginal sensations.
Humming will stimulate the vibrational triggers in the penis.
Focusing light touch on the frenulum and glans, then graduating to a more dynamic touch, then back to a light touch will activate light-touch sensors and compression sensors in a staggered approach.
Taking a moment from the physical aspect of fellatio to let the penis rest in the mouth to stimulate temperature receptors.
Applying a vacuum affect through suction of the mouth to stimulate compression/distortion sensors.
Creating a method where there is no "pattern" or logic to the process, but by mixing and matching so that his brain and body doesn't know what to expect for added stimulation and creativity.
Then make sure he returns the favor.

Of course, your mileage may vary. Certain men respond to certain stimuli differently than others. It's best to have fun experimenting, exploring, sharing, and discovering together.

Practical Techniques For Early Childhood Development and Stimulation

There are several practical techniques for early childhood stimulation that help to promote intellectual development, physical and mental skills in pre-school children. Almost all methods of sensory or intellectual stimulation employ some type of stimulation based on one or more of the five senses. One of the most effective methods involves stimulation of the visual senses in a variety of ways. Audio or hearing stimulation is also a strong method used during early childhood that can achieve significant results in pre-school aged children.

Early Childhood Development: The Five Senses

Among the theories predominant in intellectual development and learning, the theory of multiple intelligences is one of the most frequently and extensively applied. Parents who want to accelerate or promote mental and sensory development ion their children can always rely on the use of games and playing. For example, using the sense of touch to give the child experience with a variety of textures, or changes in temperature are simple, safe ways to stimulate a child's sensory experiences. Taste is stimulated by experiencing a range of different flavors. Colors and flashing lights on toys or other play objects are likewise ways of effecting substantial stimulation in early childhood skills and sensory development. Physical stimulation using motion and moving objects including rolling, bouncing, flopping or tumbling toys and objects can also be highly effective.

Early Childhood Development: Audio Stimulation Techniques

Parents and caregivers of young learners can use stimulants such as noise makers to activate audio senses. Nature sounds or environmental sounds recordings played to children are gentle but effective audio input that greatly help with early childhood stimulation. Another frequently used method for neural stimulation includes playing classical music selections in the background while the child is doing other things including during their "nap time". Beethoven, Brahms and Mozart especially, are classical music composers often used for this purpose. While the music is relaxing, it's also able to activate multiple areas of a child's brain. Surprisingly, smooth jazz (vocals) has been found to be an excellent auditory stimulant for young learners in a broad range of situations. New age (Kitaro) music can likewise be an effective stimulant as an aid to early childhood development. In addition, many children love noise makers from banging on empty pots and pans or shaking rattles, tooting whistles and horns to extracting sound from musical instruments of all kinds. It may be nerve-wracking to parents and siblings, but is essential to the child's development.

Pre-Natal Stimulation in Early Childhood Development

Not only pre-school aged children can benefit from sensory stimulation but forms of pre-natal stimulation can also be effective. Ways to introduce this can include:

• Playing soft, low-volume music through headphones placed 180 degrees apart against the mother's skin

• Talking or reading to the unborn child

• Gentle massages

Important Note: Before engaging in any of these or other techniques, parents or care-givers should consult with their obstetrician or pediatrician.

Benefits of Early Childhood Development through Sensory Stimulation

Any of the aforementioned areas can be successfully used as an effective means of early childhood stimulation to promote intellectual and sensory development in pre-school age children. Proving this stimulation allows the brain to develop more extensively and at a faster rate than non-stimulated children. This early childhood stimulation will give the child a developmental advantage over other children of the same age or level in more than 85% of cases. Such early-developed children ultimately do better in school, integrate better with peers, siblings and parents, they also tend to be happier and better adjusted overall according to numerous clinical studies. Teachers at the pre-school and primary school levels also note a higher level of social and educational integration among children who have had some type of early development stimulation.

Vestibular Stimulation, Is It Sexy? Is It Safe?

What I'm going to tell you is not new, but you probably have no idea what's involved.

What we have here is tiny organ inside your inner ear that controls the sensitivity of your nervous system, your balance or equilibrium, how you respond to your other sensory organs, your emotions, your memory, and your attention. Did I get your attention? Good. I will also show you how you can tweak your inner ear and thus tweak your nervous system, your emotions, your memory, your attention, and your sensitivity to other sensory organs. Are you with me?

In order not to sound clinical, I will speak to you in English and leave the terminology in the citations. Those who want to read medical jargon, be my guest. Those who are normal people, listen here.

Remember when you were a child you used to walk on the side of the curbs? Remember how flower bed separations and other dividers in the ground presented fun obstacle courses you never wanted to miss? Now, that you are older, you consider such activities childish. OK, be honest here, when you know for sure that no one is watching, you would climb on the occasional curb or knee-high wall and walk on it like you did when you were a kid. Don't nod your head, but am I right?

The very young and the not-so-young, we all have this innate desire to walk on a balance beam, or anything like it. When we are bored and when we see that curb, we seize the challenge of balance walking as soon as it presents itself. When we are stressed or agitated, we also tend to balance walk on anything as soon as opportunity presents itself. When I was a little kid, I wanted to walk the tightrope, but since none was available, I walked on anything that resembled a balance beam.

Any activity that challenges our balance can produce vestibular stimulation. Balance skills are task specific. And one task in particular is our favorite, the balance walking. Because I want to keep this short, I will not describe in details here, but when we balance walk, we force our left and right brains to equalize their activities. This is not an easy task. Each brain hemisphere has a mind of its own. There is no third party to coordinate activity level between the left and right brains. When we are too emotional, balancing can calm us. When we are too excited or agitated, balancing provides us that sense of control we seek.

Sometimes we can't fall asleep because thoughts are racing through our mind. This is left brain activity. When you recall something visual, right brain activity, then, and only then can you fall asleep. As you can see, from exclusively left brain activity we establish balance by focusing our attention on the right brain activity, and the equilibrium we catch allows us to fall asleep. When we are lethargic, balancing can give us energy. In short, balancing, as a physical activity, also brings equilibrium, or balance, for our emotional, intellectual, and/or perceptual state.

Do you know that nowadays you have to search long and hard to find information that describes and advocates vestibular stimulation? In other words, you will have to dig deep to find people who will tell you what balance activities can do for you. The reason for this is pure selfishness. If they tell you that balance activities can fix many of your problems, you will do your balancing activity without them, get better, and leave them. You become NOT dependent on their services.

Well, how can you be so self-centered? Didn't your parents teach you to share? Your doctor has student loans to repay, bills to pay, and put money aside for the children to go to a nice college. How will your doctor pay for all this if patients stop coming?

I am not trying to rock the boat and bankrupt the doctors and pharmaceutical companies. I just want in on the action, the action of helping people. There are plenty of people who will keep taking pills, because it's easy; they got used to them; and because they know what to expect. There are plenty of people who believe their current doctor, no matter what he or she says. And if the doctor tells them that balance activities are best suited for the very young kids, they will believe them, and ask for a refill of their prescription.

I just want to find a few people for whom the pills don't work. I want to find a few people who cannot deal with the side effects from the pills. And I want to find some people who will be curious enough to ask, What is he talking about? What do we have to lose if we try?

No, really, what can you lose if you pretend that you are balancing on a tightrope? Do you need fancy, expensive equipment? Please! If you cannot afford my water pipe stand, build your own. I don't mind. I will even give you directions and the how-to. If you have no money, and if you don't know any plumber who could give you a piece of steel water pipe for free, let me know. I can teach you a special stance that will give you that sensation of balancing on a tightrope, without any equipment at all. Just you, your socks, and your floor.

Do you still feel that if I'm not selling the water pipe, I must be after something else? Do you still feel that I want nothing but your money, and that money is at the root of it all? Well, how about this, I will post the information on the Internet, free for anyone to read, print, or copy. Will you believe me that money is not everything for me? No? You still don't trust me? Man, you have issues. Be happy and go find yourself another preacher. Good-bye.

Is anyone still with me? Good. Vestibular stimulation through specific balance activities that simulate tightrope walking is a powerful ally to have. I wrote a book about it. I built a website, and I write articles for my blog. I want you to understand and befriend my balance activities, so you can understand and befriend vestibular stimulation. It's not hard. It will be good for you. And you will thank me later.

I will give you a little technical hint. We do not yet have the equipment that can accurately measure brain activity at the time when the person is physically active. When you go in for CAT scan of your brain, you lie down on a tray, then they gently move you in center of a big metal donut. The operator will tell you to be still and walks away from you into the protected command center, where he tells you through a microphone to breathe or not to breathe during the procedure.

Vestibular stimulation is mostly achieved when the person is physically active. Because there is no machine that can measure what's going on with the brain during physical activities, all the tests and treatments, from the very start, are created to measure brain activity when the person is at rest. Few scientists will admit that their studies are missing this very essential element, brain measurements during physical activities. Here, the technological limitations made people forget, discount, and NOT take into account what happens when the person is physically active.

Tests of medications are also done when the patients are physically inactive, or at rest. What few people realize is that, unless we are sleeping, we spend our days being physically active. As plain and straightforward that is, this little factor escapes many, including professionals.

Here are some sources of medical jargon.

http://www.ctccenter.com/Pages/SensoryIntegrationInfo.html

http://www.letsaskalice.com/groundbreakingtools.html

Wait, you can also do your own search for, "vestibular stimulation" and type in one or more of these terms: memory, emotions, nervous system, ADD, ADHD, PTSD, sensory integration, balance, balance beam, tightrope, athletic performance, mental performance, language (reading, understanding, pronunciation), REM sleep, stress, anxiety, stutter, fidgeting, coordination, etc. Simply search for "vestibular stimulation" and type in whatever is keeping you awake at night.

Like I said above, you will need to go deep in your search. The good stuff will not be waiting for you on the first page of the search results. Try different search engines, and go to the library. Look at some new articles, but pay extra attention to those that were published ten, twenty, or more years ago. That's where you find some real treasures.

Here is the deal. If you find something that proves me wrong, post it here. If you find something that proves me right, post it here. Fair enough?

If I made you just a little curious about vestibular stimulation, read articles in my blog, go through all the pages in my website, get my book. This will get you started on the search for incredible. Incredible is what you will learn to call this whole thing. Why? Because it will be very hard for you to get your arms around the idea that a $12.00 steel water pipe can do so much good. I already traveled that road. It IS incredible. I wouldn't be wasting your time or my time if it weren't incredible.
