Are Alternative Methods For Treating ADHD Valid? - Getting The Facts

You would be amazed to find so many references to diet when researching ADHD. Now diet may not be the key or even the best one of alternative methods for treating ADHD. But it is certainly getting more attention and it deserves to because food does affect how our brain works! Just think how that cup of coffee will immediately make you feel more alert or how carbohydrates can give you more energy.

Research studies on how food affects our brain function.

A UCLA professor of neurosurgery, Prof. Fernando Gomez-Pinilla has no doubt at all that food is vital and is rather like a pharmaceutical compound. The research that this professor has done has appeared in the an issue of the journal Nature Reviews Neuroscience. Those studies were published after surveying over 150 other research papers on how food affects our brains. It also affects the way we sleep and carry out our daily grind.

Food and ADHD

It does not take a great leap of the imagination to realize that the neurotransmitters in the brain are also going to be affected one way or the other by what we eat. The neurotransmitters which are involved in brain function are dopamine, norepinephrine and also to a certain extent adrenaline. The one essential food element that affects our brain function is the omega- 3 fatty acid which is found in certain foods. As these are usually out of sync in ADHD, we can see the relevance of diet and food when considering alternative methods for treating ADHD.

Australian study.

Over 400 school children in Australian were given a rather special drink which contained not only Omega -3 fatty acids but also essential elements such as zinc, iron, vitamin B mix and also vitamin C. After only six months, these children were displaying better cognitive function and were doing better at learning and memory tests than the control group who were on a normal diet. There are numerous other studies which all point to the increasing importance of food when looking at all the alternative methods of treating ADHD.

Best foods to eat which support better brain function.

Ramping up on foods which contain the vital Omega-3 fatty acids can easily be done. Here is a list of the most common ones:-

• kiwi fruit

• nuts

• salmon

• green leafy vegetables

Other alternative methods for treating ADHD

There are several alternative methods which are now receiving a lot of attention. These range from:-

• neurofeedback

• yoga

• play therapy

• pet therapy

• sensory integration

• chiropractic

• sports and exercise.

• homeopathic remedies

At the end of the day I believe that diet and food will become central to any alternative methods for treating ADHD while the others I have mentioned above will become secondary. Why not check out my website to get some more facts before deciding what is right for your child.

Diagnosing ADHD and Autism Using Treatment Methods That Help Resolve Physical Compromise

Diagnosing ADHD and Autism is clearly the preliminary step to their treatment. Yet vice versa, an effective yet specific treatment can help in confirming and diagnosing ADHD and Autism, by virtue of its results. By definition a test is an assessment intended to measure a test-taker's knowledge or skill in a topic or topics. A performance test is an assessment that requires an examinee to actually perform a measurable task or activity or produce a predictable response to the experience offered by the examiner.

Researchers in two separate studies have concluded that hyperactivity in the brain in children with ADHD is causative in an inability of these children to control impulsive hand movements. A study of mirror hand movements on children with ADHD showed that testing the non-dominant hand (successively tapping each finger of that hand to the thumb) produced twice as many mirrored hand movements in the other hand during the test. This was four times more predominant in boys with ADHD than boys without the condition. "The findings reveal that even at an unconscious level, these children are struggling with controlling and inhibiting unwanted actions and behavior," researcher Stewart Mostofsky, MD, of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders at the Kennedy Krieger Institute of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, says in a news release. Another finding is that on motor development tests, children with ADHD and Autism also scored nearly 60% worse.

The cranium or skull is made up of several flat bones joined at the sutures (joints) to make up the cranial vault that houses the brain. The sutures allow for movement between the cranial bones. Dr. John Upledger, DO, developer of craniosacral therapy and founder of the Upledger Institute in Florida discovered that the craniums, especially the temporal bones (these are located on either the side of the head and commonly known as the temples) of children with ADHD and Autism are very tight with little or no movement between the cranial bones. This could explain the hyperactivity if the brain, in its wait to break free from this entrapment. Releasing the cranium, with special focus on the temporal bones at their sutural link to the sphenoid in front, the parietal bones above and the occiput behind, is all that it takes to set free the cranial vault in order to decrease the pressure on the internal milieu of the brain. This has such a powerful effect, that some of these children have even been able to integrate into normal classrooms.

The method described above is known as craniosacral therapy and along with lymph drainage therapy and visceral manipulation, more or less completes the circle of healing (sensory integration is also an important treatment here but falls outside the confines of this topic). Lymph drainage therapy offers relief through drainage of the dura, a tissue that completely encases the brain and spinal cord. This technique helps in decongesting the brain and brings relief from pressure. Visceral Manipulation helps to reduce gastrointestinal problems. These treatments help to:

1. Rebalance the nervous system in the release of both temporal bones resulting in improvement in language, learning and focus/ attention, eye contact, social interaction and reduced sleep difficulties.

2. Improve motor control.

3. Improve intestinal health to reduce gastrointestinal problems (diarrhea or constipation) and ease up toilet training.

Diagnosing ADHD and Autism will soon be based on clear and specific clinical symptoms rather than being labeled as spectrum disorder. Just from this article it is obvious that among others, the following three symptoms are specifically present in these children.

1. Mirrored hand movements.

2. Delayed milestones. This may vary from very mild to more severe.

3. Tight cranial sutures.

Since "the proof of the pudding is in the eating", the very fact that predictable results are obtained with craniosacral therapy, lymph drainage and visceral manipulation confirms that these are powerful tools in diagnosing ADHD and Autism. The value in diagnosing ADHD and Autism is that it will allow management via diet control, drug therapy and special schooling to give these children the best opportunities available to break free and come into their own to live a full life.

Different Methods Of Autism Care

Autism is a complex developmental disorder that has no cure. Though children are not cured from autism, early intervention and treatment allows those with autism to develop, learn and interact with others. Parents have several care options available to help them through the challenge of raising a child with autism.

Behaviour Modification:

Behaviour modification is a method of autism care that helps the autistic child and their parents promote appropriate behaviour while minimising unwanted behaviour. It is often broken into a few areas.

Applied behaviour analysis is the basic behaviour modification which works through a reward's system. This method of behaviour modification encourages an autistic child to start acting more appropriately by giving a treat or reward for doing the tasks or acting in a way that parents want.

Sensory integration therapy is another type of behaviour modification that works on helping an autistic child cope with the sensory information they encounter every day. Since many autistic children react to sensory information differently, such as getting upset over certain noises or colours, this type of behaviour modification works on improving the reaction to the stimulation.

Play therapy is another option among the behaviour modification treatment options parents might make use of. Play therapy focuses on the social interactions of autistic children and helps them learn appropriate ways to handle different social situations. Since autistic individuals often have difficulties with social situations, this type of treatment teaches how to interact and what is not appropriate.

Communication Treatment:

Communicating is a challenge for most autistic individuals, even those who are considered high functioning. Caring for an autistic child often requires incorporating some communication treatment.

Speech therapy is perhaps the most obvious communication therapy option available. Speech therapy focuses on teaching someone with autism how to speak. Unfortunately, some autistic individuals never begin speaking, even with therapy.

Fortunately, another type of communication treatment helps parents and autistic children communicate without using words. A picture exchange communication system, or PECS, is a method of communicating through pictures. Parents draw pictures to represent what they are asking or telling the child about and the autistic child draws pictures to show what they want or need.

Alternative Treatment:

Alternative care for those with autism varies depending on the parents and doctors. The methods are not necessarily backed by science, but doctors note that no one therapy is effective for every autistic individual so adding an option or two that is not medical might help some autistic children.

Dietary changes combined with vitamin supplements are not scientifically studied. Though studies are lacking, a healthy diet is always beneficial to childhood growth and development, so combined with therapy might help some autistic children.

Music therapy or vision therapy is sometimes helpful, particularly for sensory stimulation.

Some parents might consider adding yoga or similar lessons to a child's regimen to help develop fine motor skills.

The appropriate care and treatment for any autistic child varies. Each autistic child will react differently to different treatments, so no one treatment is effective for every child's needs.

Parents learning autistic problems in their children such as language, cognitive skills, social skills, and communication in general can be overcome with appropriate training and teaching. These challenges are the reasons why a child learning autistic structured environment that specifically caters to their sensory sensitivity and daily routine, through imitation, and visual aids can improve quite dramatically in many cases. A very effective way to help your child learn is by combing visual aids with actual demonstration.

Some of the children with the autism spectrum disorder are able develop their social skills and begins to accept social interactions, when they are encouraged to play games that allow them to interact with other children. Anxiety and confusion can be prevented by a well structured environment and it also makes a child with the disorder become more open to learning, feel secure and comfortable.

Treatment Approaches, Methods, Tools & Techniques Used to Teach Children with Autism

To deal with the challenges of autism, different methods of treatment have been developed. These current interventions have been proven to be effective and helpful when teaching a child with autism. They are the following:

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)

Relationship Development Intervention

Cognitive Skills Training

Conversational and Pragmatic Language Therapy

Reading Therapy

Socialization Skills Development

The Greenspan Approach

Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children

Picture Exchange Communication System

Sensory Integration Therapy

Developmental, Individual Difference Floor-time (DIR Floor-time)

Inclusion/Mainstreaming/Integration

Facilitated Communication (using portable computers)

Daily Life Therapy

Each approach that is listed above is often times used simultaneously with at least one other approach, and they constantly change and adapt to the needs of the growing child with the autism spectrum disorder.

Treating Autistic Children - 5 Time-tested Alternative Methods

As more research is done on autism, a brain development disorder, doctors and researchers are finding alternative ways to treat it. Medication used to be the only recourse and can have nasty side effects. Parents are looking for different, natural ways to treat their autistic children.

There have been some alternative methods in treating autism that are more common than others. Some work alone while others are used in combination. There is no telling which method will work best for your child. Speak with your doctor to learn about alternative treatments for autistic children.

1. Music Therapy: Autistic children have been found to respond to music in a number of ways. Sometimes the music makes them happy and they want to move around, helping with their motor skills. Other times children sing along to the words of the song, helping with speech therapy. This has been seen in children who do not even talk. Music therapy is a natural way to help autistic children.

2. Sensory Integration: Everyone, autistic or not, has a certain smell that reminds them of something happy. Or the touch of a certain cloth will invoke specific feelings. This holds true for some autistic children as well. Researchers have been using sensory skills to get autistic children to react. The autistic children rely more on their hearing, touch, taste and smell to understand and communicate. This is also used to calm autistic children down by using specific odors or textures.

3. Nutritional: An autistic child's diet can have an effect on the way they react. There have many different diets that doctors have been using. Some of the popular diets are gluten-free, which is no wheat products, or removing dairy from the diet. Certain ingredients in foods make autistic act out or have bad reactions. Learn what they are and eliminate them from your child's diet.

4. Omega 3: Omega 3 is a fatty acid that has been found to have health benefits, which includes better sleep patterns, better social skills and better general health. All of these are positive attributes to a child with autism. While you can buy Omega 3 at many nutritional stores, discuss with your doctor the benefits of trying Omega 3 in your autistic child's diet. Omega 3 and other essential fatty acids are needed in a child's normal growth pattern. However, no major studies have been done on the benefits of fish oil for autistic children.

5. Play Therapy: Play therapy works well because it doesn't feel like work. Autistic children are in a more relax atmosphere and have a chance to react naturally. When a therapist begins playing with the autistic child, this will give the therapist and the child a chance to bond. The child will learn to trust the therapist through playing and make the sessions easier. By helping to create bonds through playing, autistic children can learn to play well other children their own age.

Good treatment plans may use some of these alternatives along with medication or you can try them out before resorting to medication. Every child is different, so some of the alternatives therapies could work well for one autistic patient while not work for another. Don't get discouraged if it doesn't work for your child. Just look for ways to keep your child happy while giving your child the best care.
