Top 10 Reasons Why You Need To Integrate Manual Therapy Into Your Current Program

I want this article to reach out to practitioners, trainers and the general public because I feel that everyone needs to implement some form of manual therapy into their program. Whether it's a monthly Massage Therapy treatment, a bi-weekly A.R.T. visit, or a weekly laser therapy session, I believe that any and all therapies will not only make your program better, but it will make your program work better for you.

Here's how we can break this down for the above target groups:

1) For Clients, this area of health is often over looked and underutilized. Knowledge is power, and by reading this blog, readers can take action towards a proper health care plan.

2) For Trainers and Fitness Pros, working with a health care professional can take your business to the next level and help your patients achieve greater success. They will thank-you for being informed and dedicated to their success and lead them to a achieving great results.

3) For Practitioner: as a health care professional, we often think that everyone knows what we do, and immediately think every client must have this done. This is not the case so we must make everyone aware of what we do and how we can help them.

Manual therapists are Massage Therapists, Chiropractors, Osteopaths, or Body Workers. These professionals follow an actual science and technique, with takes a lot of schooling and practice. Techniques from these professionals are a far cry from the indiscriminate kneading and pounding of some masseuses, who only make people to feel better for awhile, sort of like a placebo.

Manual Therapy and Alternative Medicine is not only for pain, but to stay healthy and achieve an optimal level of fitness and health in our current workout or lifestyle plan. Whether you are an athlete looking to get stronger, or a stay at home mom looking to create a balanced lifestyle, here are my top 10 reasons you need manual therapy in your current program. There are far more reasons for someone to be working with a health care provider such as a massage therapist or chiropractor, some are general and more are individual. Feel free to leave your comments and ideas on the bottom of this blog. I would love to hear your thoughts!

1. Create Body Awareness

Have you ever been told that your glutes doesn't fire or you have one side of your body much stronger or balanced than the other? A Manual Therapist can show you how to balance and strengthen your weak areas and teach you how to get your muscles to fire properly, allowing you to take your program to the next level.

2. Removing built up toxins

Massage flushes away waste products from your muscles, tissues, and skin more easily. This helps digestive disorders (such as spastic colon, constipation and intestinal gas) as well as acne and other deficiencies.

3. Relieve pain.

Soft tissue work can help block nervous system pain receptors and increase blood flow to the muscles. It can reduce the pain of arthritis as it relieves and increases joint mobility and it takes pressure off painful joints. Trained practitioners can also help ease the pain of migraines, childbirth and cancer.

4. Increase attitude and alertness.

Bodywork improves attitude. It gets things flowing in the brain by stimulating brain-wave activity which helps increase alertness. Techniques like Massage Therapy and standard chiropractic adjustments can help you reach your goal!

5. Prevent injury and illness.

Tense muscles pull and tighten the body, restrict circulation and pull the body out of alignment. Unattended, this can lead to a host of problems.

6: Release of Endorphins

Endorphins are chemicals in the brain known as neurotransmitters, or natural pain killers. They transmit electrical signals within the nervous system. They are mostly found in the pituitary gland. In addition to decreased feelings of pain, we experience euphoria, a change in appetite, release of sex hormones, and enhancement of the immune response. With high levels of these natural chemicals, we feel less pain and fewer negative effects of stress.

7. Improve nerve Function

Contracted muscles can press on or pinch your nerves causing tingling, numbness or pain.

Certain manual therapies like massage therapy relaxes these contracted muscles to relieve the compression on your nerves. Sensory receptors in the skin and muscles wake up bringing new awareness to areas that have felt cut off by chronic tension patterns.

8. Be a Preventative Measure for Better Health in The Future

Getting treatment and making a plan with your health care professional will allow you to heal small injuries head on before they become chronic or debilitating. We call this a maintenance plan and have seen amazing results from clients who once would only come when they were severely hurt. Now they don't even go to that place, all it takes is half an hour every 2-3 weeks.

9. Work with A complete Health Care Team

If you're lucky enough to go to or work in a clinic with a number of different practitioners, you'll know what I mean by this. Having an entire team behind you not only will allow you or your clients to get every aspect of their health properly taken care of, but it allows the client to feel comfortable and confident in their health care plan.

10. Guidance

As practitioners, we are often asked advice and sometimes told the life story of our clients. This happens to any professional who allows their client to feel safe and confident in their presence. When you achieve this safety zone with your clients not only will they heal quicker, but they will refer clients your way as well.

Innovate to Integrate

The ever-changing consumer market is giving the organizations enough reasons to modify their strategies towards their customers. In the present era, there are two things, which can drive the profit margin of a company, one is constant innovation and the other one is to serve the customers in a better way than the next best competitor. As the consumers observe a product through the peripheral route rather than the central route, so companies need to look for the motivational factors, like-

- Daily contemplation

- Daily transformation

- Daily Casteration and finally

- Sensory gratification

These emotional factors will only be achieved iff the organization encourages an innovative culture. Innovation brings about a movement from existing state to desired state in the consumers mind.

The logic behind performing market research survey is to gauge the market potential, understand customer tastes and preferences. Innovation comes only when the company wants to satiate the needs as well as provide more value additions. Integration all the value drivers is really a critical task and it requires lot of analysis of the inspirational instincts. The reference group factor plays crucial role in delivering the right kind of product to a right kind of consumer group. The several types of reference groups are-

- Primary and Secondary

- Aspirational and Dissociative

- Formal and Informal

Innovation for integration is a necessity when the company is either thriving or else it is trying to make its footsteps in the market playground. Hierarchical value mapping defines the various levels of value realization by consumers and how organizations can offer their customers to find out the hidden values in their products. The model determining value creations is as structured below:-

FIG:- Hierarchical Value Mapping Model

To decide on what process to innovate and integrate is a herculean task and many organizations can perform this task very effectively if they follow certain principles, like General Incongruency Adaptation Level Theory (GIAL), where it's stated that the innovation should not fall between two extreme stages, otherwise it would loose meaning. The innovation must not be too alien from the current product portfolio, because it will create too much of tension, excitement in the consumers. However, as a natural process customer always want to reduce the disturbances within their mind and while doing that they generally remove different brands from their evoked set of brand personalities.

The basis of product innovation is to create a different niche market for that specific category and target a particular segment group. Inspire, Innovate, Integrate - these should sum up an organization's vision, drawing inspiration from its in-built expertise, innovating through new technologies and their usages and integrate all of them to give the best and cost-effective solutions to every business problem.

Constant innovation to offer the best optimum services and solutions to the partners should be the correct strategy to play in this dynamic world. While developing on resolving to "Innovate and Integrate", the focus must be on creating an effective change management process to implement the solutions.

In comparing the degree to which corporations integrate sustainability innovation as business strategy to doing so through product and process design, four types of corporate actors are found: leaders, laggards, dabblers, braggers. Leaders integrate sustainability innovations into both business strategy and product and process design, while laggards do neither.

Those that have pushed social and environmental issues up the priority list in their product and process design, but have yet to strengthen integration in their business strategy might be considered to be 'dabbling' with sustainability. Conversely, strong integration into business strategy without sustainability manifesting itself in product and process design might suggest 'bragging' with little action.

There may be some barriers to sustainability innovation, including "a high degree of internal and external skepticism." It also makes recommendations for companies looking to integrate sustainability innovation.

Success is usually achieved by being selective: Rather than attempt to push Sustainability-Driven Innovation too hard, too far, too soon, it is better to focus on one or two nuggets of opportunity that look promising and demonstrate some tangible benefits," the report states. "Often, careful engagement of external stakeholders is a great way to identify these opportunities."

The main concept is to integrate every business unit under the same roof, to host in the same area the whole development chain from idea through production phases, all the way to products ready for market launch. By bringing all the actors closer together the hope is to shorten the time for developing new products, and make these available to consumers much faster than what is possible today.

Cooperation and transfer of knowledge between different actors is very important for a cluster. The best way to transfer knowledge is trough personal meetings, thus it is very important to have everyone gathered at the same place.

In the knowledge economy, the one sure source of lasting competitive advantage is knowledge. In the theoretical field, interest in knowledge management has grown dramatically. In the business community, organizations are coming to regard knowledge-based intangible assets such as technological know-how and innovation as their most valuable and strategic resource, and they are also increasingly realizing that they must effectively and efficiently manage and cultivate their knowledge and competencies to maintain sustainable competitive advantage.

However, there is scarcity on knowledge strategy toward dynamically integrating technological innovation with knowledge management in academic and practical domain. Therefore, based on some theories such as technological innovation, strategic management, transaction cost economics, organizational learning and knowledge management, the framework of knowledge strategy and the model of knowledge-based communities of creation are evaluated.

The Business Architecture Integration, Innovation describes an approach and method for building an architecture of the business. It explains how to build and integrate the core cross-functional processes, sometimes called value streams, with all the architectures of the enterprise and the corporate strategy. It formally captures the intellectual capital in an "architectural type" blueprint or model of the business that is available for strategic and tactical analysis. Consequently, the business and IT teams can work in harmony with the insight gleaned from the Business Architecture to create higher profits, superior customer service and a competitive advantage for the enterprise.

How to Help Children With Autism to Integrate With Others

How can we help our children with autism fit in with other kids?

As parents, it can break our hearts when we see our child with autism struggle with feeling different.? Often children with autism may end up avoiding social situations altogether because of the challenges of decoding social signals.? In addition, the noises, sounds, and smells of those around them may be too much for them from a sensory standpoint.? Finally, they may have episodes of being bullied, and thus are afraid to deal with any more social situations.

Deal With Your Own Thoughts and Feelings About Your Child With Autism

Sometimes, we are unaware of the depth of thought and emotion we have with our child. We may be in denial of his/her differences.? We may unconsciously be angry that they are not like neurotypical children, and we may be trying to make them be someone they aren't. We may be either overly focused on their weaknesses.

Make sure, as a parent, that you take the time to read autobiographies of children, teenagers, and adults on the autism spectrum.? Watch TV shows and movies that portray Aspergers and Autism in a realistic, yet positive light.? Go on YouTube, for example, and view the videos that Taylor Morris has put out.? As parents, teachers, friends of individuals with autism, we need to give them the respect of understanding what autism spectrum is, and respecting the differences, strengths, and challenges.

Once You Have Learned All About Autism, Teach Your Child About His/Her Strengths

It's absolutely paramount that you let your child know how unique s/he is.? Learn about his/her special talents, interests, and abilities.? Help him find activities in which he can participate, which can help him learn more and build on those strengths.? Once your child is involved in some of these activities, she may find out that she connects with other kids with those same interests.

Start Off Small

Be on the lookout for other kids in your child's class who may have connected with him/her.? There are some special kids out there (NT's) who are genuinely nice, extroverted kids, and they will often serve as a kind of social buddy and friend to your child.? Be proactive about getting your child together for play dates when younger, and help your child learn how to use the phone to invite another child over.? By doing this on a regular basis, you can help your child appreciate her friend/s.

It's best to begin with one-on-one interactions, since triads (three or more kids) can be very confusing for your child.

Take Time to Teach: Before, During, and After

It's not always easy, but you are your child's best advocate and teacher.? In as non-intrusive a way as possible, talk with your child about what a good friend is like.? You may want to check your local library for kids' books that talk about and teach friendship in a story.? This will hep prepare your child for the concept of friendship.

During the play date, you may need to intervene if you see really inappropriate behaviors, or if you see that your child is not very engaged.

After the play date, you can talk with your child about how the time went, and discuss what went well, and what can be done differently.

Realize That Your Child May Truly Enjoy and Need Time Alone

Being alone is not the worst thing in the world.? In fact, individuals on the autism spectrum are often mystified by how desperately NT's seem to want to connect with each other. Time alone in between time with friends allows your child to explore his/her interests, be away from distracting sounds and lights, and in his/her own comfort zone, which would usually be his/her room or home.

Research Helpful Social Skill Materials and Share Them With the School Social Worker

School social workers have limited time, but they can be very helpful in helping your child on the autism spectrum learn appropriate social skills.? If you are involved in your child's individualized education planning, I would suggest that you look up Michelle Garcia Winner on the internet.? All her material on social thinking is invaluable, and is written with teachers in mind, so that these social skills can be literally written into your child's individualized education plan.? She writes in a way that educators can understand, so that social and emotional intelligence can be broken down into goals and objectives for your child.

I hope these tips come in helpful for you.? Let me know of any other ideas you have!

Move to Groove: The Importance of Body Movements to Integrate the Brain for Learning

Learning begins at the moment a baby takes his or her first breath. The moment a human being enters this world, they begin to learn. They embark on a journey of exploration, need-fulfillment and the integration of multi-sensory information. Each and every sound they hear, thing they see, touch they receive, scent they smell, and taste they experience is sorted into various parts of the brain and "stored" for future use. As a child progresses through various stages of life, new information continues to be received, sorted, and stored - each new skill building upon the last.

Patterned movement is an important aspect of higher-level learning skills - such as reading, writing and spelling. The amazing truth is that the development of movement and physical orientation in relationship to the world are actually the building blocks to academic learning patterns. Everything a baby and toddler does helps support the foundations of learning language, reading, spelling, and writing. For example, when a baby crawls, the movement of the legs and arms transitioning in opposite sequential patterns is actually sending signals back and forth across the mid-brain: The simple act of crawling is literally making the two sides of the brain "talk" to each other. It is movement and play, discovery and associative relationships, and the gathering of information via the senses that networks the brain for future tasks.

The effect of alternating body movements does not stop after the toddler stage of development. Continuing to integrate alternating body movements during normal play - or any activity - keeps the brain "talking" amongst its parts. Climbing, jumping, skipping, riding a bike, and swimming are all powerful brain networking exercises. The act of doing activities that alternate the right and the left sides of the body continues to promote the exchange of neural information from right to left hemispheres and vice versa, that was initiated during infancy. This process of brain communication is essential to successful learning.

That is why it may be wise to "get back to basics" in life: participating in activities that come naturally to children which have been incorporated into daily life for generations. Some of these activities can include riding a bike, shooting basketballs, playing hopscotch, swimming, playing "tag", jumping, skipping, and so on. As simple as these activities sound, they involve movement from both sides of the body and are powerful brain boosters for learning.

As a Speech Pathologist of many years, I always encourage families to promote more physical activity into their children's lives. This can be achieved in several ways. First, be an example; participate in activities with your children such as bike rides, shooting "hoops", bowling, throwing horseshoes, etc. There are so many activities that families can participate in together; this not only helps you have fun and promote bonding, but it actually fosters brain function development. Here are some general suggestions for promoting whole body activity into the lives of your child:

Reduce the time they spend with their Game Boys and X- Boxes and promote more time for movement activities.

Help your child find a sport that interests them and that allows for whole body movement. Many children like group sports like basketball or baseball, while others enjoy more personalized sports such as tennis. Sporting activities can be competitive or just be played for fun. Encourage your kids to be kids.

Allow your child time to unwind after school before requiring homework completion. After all, they have been sitting in a desk for close to eight hours each day, and their brains and bodies need time to re-integrate.

Encourage writing exercises to promote visual, tactile, and kinesthetic input into the learning process.

Be attentive to how your child learns and attends to his/her work the best. Create learning environments around these observations. For example, you may find that allowing your child to stand at the kitchen counter, while she gently rocks from side to side will help her complete her math assignment faster and with more accuracy. In summary in parents, encourage your child to be more active. Physical exercise that promotes moving the two sides of the body in alternating movements not only promotes better health in general, but it also integrates the brain for systematic learning. Have fun with your children and demonstrate the joys of ole' fashion fun and games. Parents, it is time to move and groove the brain into success!

Integrate Your Autistic Child With Encouragement

I have learned from my brother who has his disorder of autism, that he and our family needed to be integrated in our community with encouragement. In addition, our family could not do it on our own. We needed additional help for all of us to understand how to function in the community as a family and individually.

When our family was able get together for holidays to do fun things, my brother was encouraged to be part of activities and be integrated, as well. He had to learn his boundaries and the boundaries of others.

You will want to take into consideration or ask questions, if your child should go to a park and play with other children? Go to a restaurant to eat with the family, friends and relatives? Go on trips or overnight special events? Go shopping or to a mall? etc.

Is your child going to display temper tantrums, have other behavior disorders that will make it difficult for he or she to be integrated? If this becomes a problem, your child may have to learn social skills on how to handle new interactions with different places and people.

There are tips and steps you might want to consider to take, to help your child and you to be integrated with encouragement and be part of the community. For example:

* Talk to your child. Make a list of what your child likes to do and does not want to do.

* What are his or her interests?

* What are the places he or she would like to visit?

* Does your child have confidence and knowledge to understand where and what the plans are?

* If your child does not understand what the plans are, will you be able to explain them to him or her so they understand?

* Are you as parent(s), caregiver(s), able to communicate what the needs are for your child to be integrated?

* To complete an activity, will you be able to teach your child how it is accomplished?

* What about the environment for your child? Is it positive, is it stressful, is it relaxing?

* Will there be loud noises, bright flashing lights that can create sensory problems?

* Are you willing to check out the areas for your child before you arrive, to know what is expected?

* Is there going to be a lot of walking? Is your child able to walk long distances or even short distances without conflict?

Communicate with other people in your community. Find out who your child will be interacting with and where that will take place. Keep in mind the strengths and weaknesses of your child. Never push or force your child into some activity your child will not like or do.

These are some of the questions and concerns you will want to consider before trying to introduce your child to integration in your community.

You as parent(s), caregiver(s) have the responsibility to take charge of your child and understand how imperative it is for your child to be integrated in your community with encouragement.
